Tomorrow night, the Temple will burn.
Partially funded through a kickstarter campaign, scuplptor David Best has built an intricate, 75-foot wooden temple in the city of Derry, Northern Ireland, where the events of Bloody Sunday took place. The project has a lofty goal of creating a ritual which is "a celebration and ... a healing and understanding". Visitors are encouraged to leave messages and mementos in the structure. Can't visit in person? You can also visit (and leave messages in) a virtual model of the temple in Minecraft.

The old city of Derry/Londonderry is charming: if it were in Hampshire it would be packed with tourists all summer and local houses would start at half a million (alright, maybe not in the Bogside). There may come a day when it can stage agreeable arty-farty events without anyone referring to the Troubles. But this is not that day.

Well Derry was UK City of Culture in 2013 so it's not a total stranger to arty-farty events. And to be fair, you can't set fire to a large wooden structure in Northern Ireland and not invoke the Troubles, as is obviously intentional here. The structure itself is beautiful - I didn't think it would be quite so intricate. I think this is a nice idea and a positive thing.

You've got to admit, though, that this giant tower of flame atop a big hill at least has a subtlety to it that is lacking in most of the other public art of the region.

Wow, the images in the "intricate ..." link are impressive. And the last picture on the page, the tower against the backdrop of Derry at twilight, is especially lovely.
